Books in the woods. The first library in the Shelbyville area was the Log Library and Chapel at Lithia Springs. Many of the speakers and visitors were writers or written about by others. Douthit published some books in addition to his newspaper, "Our Best Words." Look closely and you'll not only find some of these books, but you will also find signed copies sometimes accompanied by personal notes. The Jasper Douthit Project is here to help you find these literary gems. FEATURED Literary Work The autobiography of John Sobieski, A Lineal Descendant of King John III of Poland The Life-Story and Personal Reminiscences of Col. John Sobieski This autobiography is like two books in one. The first 149 pages are devoted to Sobieski's family history in Europe after they were cast out of their native Poland. Sobieski traces his own personal journey across Europe after his father is murdered during a political uprising. Arriving in the United States, he shares detailed accounts of fighting for the Union Army in the Civil War. During his service in Mexico, he personally met General Escobedo, President Juarez, Maximilian, General Mejia and General Miramon. All of this happened by the time he was 25 years old. Sobieski then settled in Minnesota and became involved with reform and politics. Along the way he became a member of Jasper Douthit's Unitarian Church in Shelbyville, Illinois, where he served several times as chautauqua platform manager. The first edition of Sobieski's autobiography is unique. At least one later edition was published by Sobieski's wife after they moved to California, deleting references to the original publisher, Douthit. If your interest is in Sobieski's connection to Jasper Douthit and the Lithia Springs Chautauqua, be sure to look for the first edition. Some editions carry unique inscriptions. The short-run of these books often found their way into the hands of Sobieski's friends. At least one copy on the market was a gift from Mrs. Charlton Edholme, a personal friend of the Sobieski family and Carrie Nation. Just

"The Annotated Life-Story and Personal Reminiscences of Col. John
Sobieski" is the autobiography of a chautauqua manager and traveling
temperance reformer who had been in line to become King III of Poland
before an uprising banished him from his homeland. He served as platform manager at Lithia Springs in Shelby County, Ill. and was a member of Douthit's church. Douthit & Sons published the first edition of the hard copy of this whirlwind story of the era of reform. Now EcoLitGy Communications has released the first and second editions on CD presented side by side with annotations and hyperlinks to background information. |
