Behind The Curtain

| Heritage Lake News came into being on January
8, 2000. I edit from wherever I happen to be, which is usually Gooseberry
Hill. I live 22 miles from civilization. I like it in the woods.
Unfortunately, it has its drawbacks. Number one: it is not
possible to get a fractional T1. Not for any amount of money.
The infrastructure isn't here. My Linux boxisn't even plugged in.
What's the point?
Workaround? I use Netsetter on all my computers, both Mac and PC. Speeding up my browsers sort of compensates for being on a 56k modem. I use MTCO as my provider. Best provider I've ever had and I've been on the net since the freenets. Rock solid and fast. Well, as fast as 56k can be. Mention my name when you switch to MTCO -- they'll give me $5. Have someone mention you after you switch and you'll get $5. Next problem: power surges and brownouts.
I have an APC 400 BackUPS but it doesn't always do the job. Usually
if it is raining, I'll stick to the laptop. Otherwise, I run the
risk of losing power when I least expect it. Happens to everyone
at the lake. Not sure why. I'm looking into a solar power source
so I can eliminate the power surge problems.

Step one: I turned on my Macintosh and immediately got hit by
a power blip. I restarted and the computer verified that everything
was okay.
I am always skeptical so I rebuilt the desktop just for good measure. Okay, we're ready to start. Why is my computer at a weird angle? So I can swap the digital cable with the printer cable when I need to. |

Huitaca helps me. Actually she's just watching insects on the
window.
I connect the camera to the power adapter and put the rechargeable battery into the charger. |
